bpmn.io draws BPMN in the browser — process era turns it into a living process landscape.
bpmn.io (Camunda) is a free, open-source JavaScript library for creating BPMN diagrams without registration. process era is the SaaS platform around it: with storage, collaboration, AI model generation and 9 process views instead of one.
Positioning
bpmn.io isn't a classic competing product — it's a developer toolkit: the bpmn-js JavaScript library renders and edits BPMN 2.0 diagrams in the browser, with no backend of its own and no account. process era builds on the same open BPMN standard, but delivers the platform around it: storage, permissions, collaboration, AI and eight further process views.
bpmn.io is an open-source project by Camunda, bundling JavaScript libraries such as bpmn-js, dmn-js and form-js for modeling BPMN, DMN and form diagrams directly in the browser.[1] At demo.bpmn.io you can create a BPMN diagram without any registration — ideal for a quick start or for embedding bpmn-js into your own application.
The catch: bpmn.io doesn't save anything. The library itself offers no persistence, no user account and no collaboration — anyone who wants to keep a diagram has to download it as a .bpmn or .svg file, or build their own backend integration.[2] That's exactly where process era picks up: a ready-made platform where BPMN is just one of nine views — including storage, versioning, permissions and CIP tracking.
When process era is the better choice over bpmn.io
- When you want to store and find BPMN diagrams centrally in the cloud instead of manually downloading and filing them.
- When multiple people need to work on processes together in real time — bpmn.io, as a library, is built for single-user use inside a host application, not multi-user collaboration.
- When you don't have a developer team to embed and maintain bpmn-js inside your own application with a backend, login and permission management.
- When you need views beyond BPMN — SIPOC, RACI, Turtle, Makigami, maturity — on the same process.
- When improvement suggestions should be captured as trackable issues with financial impact, not just as comments on the diagram.
Head-to-head: bpmn.io vs. process era
Tabular overview. Sources at the bottom of the page.
| Criterion | bpmn.io | process era | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Licensing model | bpmn-js is released under the bpmn.io license: free to use, but with conditions — among other things, the bpmn.io branding must remain visible in the editor unless a commercial Camunda license is purchased.[2] | User-based SaaS licensing model with no branding requirement in the product. (Detailed license tiers will follow with the pricing release.) | Competitor |
| Registration / onboarding | No account required: BPMN diagrams can be created instantly in the browser at demo.bpmn.io.[1] | Account required — in exchange for persistent storage, collaboration and permission management instead of throwaway diagrams. | Competitor |
| Saving / persistence | No built-in storage. Diagrams are downloaded locally as .bpmn/.svg files or must be persisted via your own backend integration.[2] | Automatic cloud storage with versioning. No manual download workflow needed. | process era |
| Process views | A pure BPMN tool (bpmn-js); DMN and form modeling only via separate libraries (dmn-js, form-js), each with its own integration.[1] | 9 native views from a single source of truth: Business Process Canvas, BPMN, SIPOC, Turtle, Makigami, RACI, Table, Issue, Maturity. | process era |
| Collaboration | No native multi-user collaboration. bpmn-js is an embedding library — collaboration would have to be built by the host application itself.[1] | Cloud-based collaboration with permission management, comments and audit trail. | process era |
| AI model generation | No native AI model generation in the editor. | AI generates process models from descriptive text, including integrated catalog modeling. | process era |
| CIP / improvement tracking | No tracking provided — bpmn.io is a pure modeling tool with no process management features. | Issues with financial impact scoring, owner, status and audit trail, anchored directly to the process. | process era |
| Embedding / extensibility | Can be embedded directly into your own applications as a JS library and extended as open source — the basis of many custom solutions, including the Camunda Modeler.[3] | Closed SaaS platform with no embedding into third-party applications — but ready to use instantly with no development effort. | Competitor |
